Paradoxically

I love books. Books, books, books!

Urban Gothic

Urban Gothic - Brian Keene
The beginning annoyed me a little but it got moving quickly enough. I was actually a little surprised but grateful at how quickly the shit started going down. The author wrote a long ass monologue moment on page 90-something, so beware. It's not too bad though.

At one part I couldn't figure out why this one character would even think that drinking sewer water would be a good idea.

And how the hell does Scug(sp?) know slang if he's never interacted with people outside of hunting and killing them?

There are some disgusting bits in here. That's all I will say. lol

Read it and enjoy.

Well then...

Daemon of the Dark Wood - Randy Chandler

Well. That was... interesting. I thought the subject matter of Pan/Dionysus being based on a real creature pretty cool, but it started off slow and dragged for a bit too long before escalating to the crazy climax.

There aren't many grammar issues and wrong word choices that I noticed, but there are redundancies and mixed metaphors that caught my eye. It needed to be cut down some, and it definitely needed a proofreader. Remember those? Those were the good old days.

And it left me with questions. Now I am perfectly okay with being left to my own imagination on some things by the end of a novel but there are good questions to be left with, and then there are bad ones.

The characters each had their own distinct voices for the most part, so I thought the author did a good job with that. Maybe it's because there are so many characters, but I wasn't that attached to any of them besides the old lady. She was kind of cool.
What was the point of needing to dig up the tree roots in order to free the ghosts, if the stump grinder is what finished the Daemon off in the end? And wtf was the point of Asa even existing? His weird was what? To die and become a ghost in order to get an elderly person to do the work instead? It didn't make much sense.
I'll just leave you with this:

2 Kinds of People

The Stone Man - A Science Fiction Horror Novel - Luke Smitherd

I don't want to give anything away, so I will just ask this:

What kind of bargain are you willing to make in order to keep living?

Do you think it would be worth it?

Rafe's Rules Don't Work So Well

Rafe's Rules - P.J. Tallis

I really only had one issue with this, but that issue kept me from giving this 4 stars, because it bothered me so much.

     Over-explaining.

The character likes to break the 3rd wall repeatedly with awkward and captain-obvious-style explanations. It’s just unnecessary, and the story would be better without. Just show it, dude. No need to tell.

For example, on the first page:

“She looked up sharply, as if – forgive me if I sound crude, it’s just my style – as if someone in a distant room had farted.”

That line would have been so much funnier without the middle part. I mean, I still laughed (because, come on, fart jokes) but it would have read better without, you know?

So yeah. Unfortunately, it hit one of my big pet peeves, otherwise this would have been 4 stars fo’ sho. The MC is kick ass and not fucking around. Well, she does fuck around some, in another way (boom chicka bow wow) but you know what I mean.

It's still good, though. Read it.

DRACULAS

DRACULAS - Blake Crouch, Jack Kilborn, Jeff Strand, F. Paul Wilson SO GLORIOUS.

Read it.

**edited to add** Okay, so I am about to reread this because basically all I can remember is that I loved it. This time I will try to write a review that's longer than 4 words and hopefully more informative.

I ain't makin' no promises, though.

Trouble in Mudbug (Ghost-in-Law, #1)

Trouble in Mudbug (Ghost-in-Law, #1) - Jana Deleon
This is just a 3, because the first half was pretty enjoyable but then what the hell happened towards the ending?

The MC, for the most part, wasn't a pushover by any means and she wasn't a total idiot. That's always a nice change of pace.

Some funny lines:

"I can't believe it either... I didn't know evil incarnate could die."

"Who dressed me like a hooker and shoved me in a coffin?"

"The dead didn't show up to their own funerals and call people assholes."

These are just from the very beginning of the book. Helena is easily the best character.

The problem with this book is the romance and the sappy, totally unbelievable ending, which is really a common thing in romance books, but Christ on a pogo stick -IT SHOULDN"T BE. They know each other for like a week; they only spend maybe an hour together for the first few days, but they're in love at the end? Not to mention that for a good half of the time, the conversations between them can be summed up with Maryse being a bitch (for good reason) and him being patronizing and confused.

Yeah. So, I am torn. I know there are plenty who don't mind the typical romance tropes, so I recommend this to you guys. It's really not bad, for the most part. lol.

The Eyes of The Sun

The Eyes of The Sun - Christina McMullen
3.5 stars, really.

The Comeback Kiss

The Comeback Kiss - Lani Diane Rich
Meh. Probably my least favorite of her books that I've read, so far.

Time Off for Good Behavior and A Little Ray of Sunshine are my faves.

Just saying.

The Cabin: Mia's Story

The Cabin: Mia's Story - Natalie Stark
Lately I have been self-reflecting a bit. I recently decided my penchant for priest porn must be from when I read "The Thorn Birds" at an impressionable age (13 years old). Just kidding. Besides this book I haven't come across any priest porn. However I am totally for it, so if you find some, let me know!

Despite my particular... love, I only found this okay. It might be just because it is so short. I also found it overly dramatic.

So there you have it.

Zombie, Inc.

Zombie, Inc. - Christine Dougherty
Jesus... For some reason I went into this thinking it would just be a horror-comedy.

NAY. THAT"S A NEGATIVE.

I REPEAT: NAY.

Let's just say this gets pretty damn dark.

I am both annoyed at but in love with how some questions go unanswered. It's a conflicted feeling...lol.

This is a good book. Read it!

Oh. And try not to get too attached to the characters. lol

Nor Iron Bars a Cage

Nor Iron Bars a Cage - Kaje Harper
AAAWWWWW. I really enjoyed the story and romance here, and I also loved how cantankerous the MC is, as I am a bit cantankerous, myself.

READ IT!

READ IT NOW!

That is all.

The Avenger (Bigler County, #2)

The Avenger (Bigler County, #2) - Jo Robertson
I managed to make it to page 264 before I called it quits.

This is just too stupid, I'm sorry. It starts off pretty interesting but soon enough there are inconsistencies, missing explanations, unrealistic reactions, and too many plot points going on. It's kind of a mess, if I am to be honest.

What probably irks me the most is that the heroine is a freakin' idiot, especially for a professor. Now I'm not saying she isn't allowed some stupid moments but she has few smart ones, know what I mean?

Also, there is no real mystery.

1. It's pretty obvious who the killer is.

2. She has 3 different dudes after her, one of which is Mexican. She gets a "mysterious" phone call from someone calling her a "gringa bitch" and everyone acts clueless about who the caller could be. Seriously?

...Yo no lo recomiendo.

Melody in Lingerie

Melody in Lingerie - Imogen Linn
I see that a lot of my issues with this book have already been stated in other reviews. So I will just jump to it, then.

I didn't hate it, but I found it pretty forgetful and unrealistic. I thought maybe it was just me, since the whole "master/slave" relationship thing isn't really my style.

Well apparently "sir/slut" is not my style, either. I was pretty annoyed by it, actually.

And he is a stranger. I don't recall condoms being mentioned either (but maybe one was? I did say it was forgetful).

But hey, whatever floats your boat, right?

The Alien King and I

The Alien King and I - Lizzie Lynn Lee
Lol. So stupid... But in a funny-stupid sort of way.
